What clothes to wear when you have an Apple body shape

As a personal stylist, I tend to find that my clients with an Apple body shape, have the most problems when understanding what styles suit them.

The Apple body shape is defined by a ‘top heavy’ body; wide torso, broad shoulders and a full bust.  Apple shapes usually have thinner arms, legs and hips. The area which can feel like a nightmare to dress for is the tummy, which tends to be where weight is gained.

To make life easier for the Apple shapes out there, see the list of Do’s and Dont’s below.

  1. Emphasise the bust- This body shape tends to have a great bust (lucky you!), so it is really important to show it off- BUT in the right way.  V necks, cross over tops and plunging necklines will work really well.  Stay clear of the Bardot (off the shoulder) trend this season- this will make your chest look too top heavy and throw your body shape even more off balance.

2. Go fitted on the shoulders and bust- There is a real temptation with this shape to wear a big baggy top to hide the tummy.  However, all you end up doing is making your whole top half two sizes bigger than it actually is!  You can still wear floaty tops/ dresses but ensure they flow from underneath the bust (like an empire line).

3. Wear tops with block colours that finish below the waistline- Tops and Jackets that finish on the waistline will add more bulk to the tummy area. So look for longer jackets and tops to lengthen the top half of the body. Remember to stay clear of tops with bold patterns- block colours won’t draw the eye to the tummy area.

4. Wear flat-fronted bottoms- Again, you don’t want any extra fabric or pockets adding bulk to the waistline.  Trousers or skirts with a side fastening zip are great.

5. No belts to be worn around the waist- this will only emphasise your tummy as shown by this photo of Jessica Simpson.
